Hunley Day - Memorial Service to the
crewmen lost on February 17, 1864 from the Hunley Submarine and the USS
Housatonic.
|
| Sunrise
Presbyterian Church at Breach Inlet, 3222 Middle Street, Sullivan's Island |
 | The service was preceded by a 3.6 mile march by an honor guard
carrying the flags of the US and CS. |
 | The Snowden Chapter of the Order of Confederate Rose served light
refreshments after the march. |
 | The service began with the Invocation by Reverend Vance Polley of
the Sunrise
Presbyterian Church. |
 | We didn't take photos during the church service, but it was a moving
ceremony. The Welcome was given by John Jowers, Steve Riggs read his
poem about Confederate dead, and Kathy McCants sang a beautiful solo.
A haunting bell rang as Randy Burbage read the names of the dead from
both ships. As each name was read, the bell tolled, and a soldier
picked up a long-stemmed red rose to give to a veiled mourner. |
 | The soldiers escorted the ladies in mourning to the beach at Breech
Inlet, near the point where the Hunley was launched. |
 | The wreaths for the Hunley and the Housatonic were made by Jeanne
Weil. Local members of the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. (SubVets)
tossed the wreaths into the waves. |
 | Each of the 13 mourners tossed a rose into the surf. |
 | The soldiers fired their muskets and a cannon salute. |
 | Sgt. Jay Walker played taps on the bugle. |
 | Everyone sang Dixie! |
 | Many of the participants visited local establishments to share food
and drinks, and exchange information the old-fashioned way - without a
mouse! |
